Arrival in Tangier
Today, in addition to visiting more of Tangier in the morning, you depart for a drive through northern Morocco stopping in some smaller villages, with eventual arrival to Chefchaouen. Known as the blue city, which will be evident upon your arrival. The city was settled at the end of the 15th century by Muslim and Jewish Spaniards and Portuguese who were fleeing the forced conversion order by Spain’s Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. This charming village will be your base for the night. Overnight in Tangier. (L, D)
Upon your arrival in Tangier, your guide will warmly welcome you. Take a day to unravel the tales of this captivating city, once frequented by renowned writer Paul Bowles. Tangier, known for its vibrant nightlife during World War II, was a place where forbidden indulgences preceded the infamous Las Vegas tagline: What happens in Tangier, stays in Tangier!
Note: For those considering a Spanish prelude to Morocco, a convenient hovercraft service connects Algeciras, Spain, to Tangier.
Many civilizations have made Tangier a home. The Phoenicians settled here before the 10th century BC, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans and more traversed Tangier. In 1923, the colonial powers named it an international city, which led to its reputation where spies and intrigue mixed in the city’s many cafes and restaurants. In the 1970’s, Tangier earned a reputation as being a place young backpackers could come and enjoy hashish and kif!
Tangier has not lost its fascination. Dinner tonight will introduce you to Moroccan cuisine and more. The music of Morocco is heard most everywhere; from cafes, restaurants and if you are so inclined…from nightclubs which are prevalent in Tangier. Dinner and overnight in Tangier. (Dinner served)
