Southern Ethiopia: The Omo Valley
February 13 – 21, 2019



Day 1- Wednesday, February 13- Arrival

The Historic Route Tour ends. Transfer to hotel in Addis Ababa. 


Day 2- Thursday, February 14- Addis Ababa to Arba Minch

Relax at your hotel for the morning. Meet with an Awaze Tour representative and depart for early lunch. Early afternoon flight for Arba Minch, the gateway to the Omo Valley. Upon arrival, meet with your guide and driver. Drive to a Dorze village in the Guge Mountains. The Dorze are known for their tall, beehive-shaped bamboo houses. If the base becomes infested with termites, the entire house can be lifted and moved to another location. Return to Arba Minch for the night. 


Day 3- Friday, February 15- Drive to Turmi 

Take a boat trip on Lake Chamo and view some of the largest crocodiles in the world sunning on the banks of the lake. Hippopotami and bird life are also abundant. Drive to Turmi, home of the Hamer people. The Hamer are known for their body decorations and the clay and ochre that they put in their hair. 


Day 4- Saturday, February 16- Omorate Excursion

Excursion to Omorate. Cross the Omo River via a traditional canoe to visit the Dasanch Tribe. Return to Turmi, stopping at the Demeka market where the Hamer and Karo people trade. 


Day 5- Sunday, February 17- Drive to Jinka 

Drive to Jinka, via the lands of the Ari and the Banna. The Banna are known for decorating their bodies with clay. 

Day 6- Monday, February 18- Excursion to Mago National Park

Early morning drive to the Mago National Park to visit the Mursi people. The Mursi women are known for the clay plates they insert into their lower lips. Visit the Omo Valley Museum in Jinka.

Day 7- Tuesday, February 19-  Drive to Konso

Konso Village

Visit an Ari Village. Drive to Konso, recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. A highland people, the Konso are known for the ancient and intricate terraces on their farms and their neat and well-planned villages. En route, visit the weekly market at Alduba where the Tsemay, Benna and Ari that have gathered to barter their goods.


Day 8- Wednesday, February 20- Drive to Hawassa

Drive the lakeside town of Hawassa. Relax and rest from your journey at one of the Hawassa’s fine resorts. 


Day 9- Thursday, February 21- Drive to Addis Ababa

Drive to Addis Ababa. Optional souvenir shopping if time permits. Transfer to airport for late night departure or additional hotel night booked upon request.
